What is building SaaS in public

  • The ‘Building SaaS in public’ newsletter documents our journey of building Superthread, a project management tool with integrated tasks & docs.

  • We hope to share our experiences and thoughts – highs and lows.

  • Building a SaaS product in public will always be free.

1. Why this, why now

Building a SaaS company is super hard, especially today in 23/24. Budgets for new tools are being axed, companies are looking to consolidate, and funding is tight.

It is extremely hard for folk like me who do not come from the world of SaaS.

As a former founder of a gaming company, the dynamic is completely different. In games, if the game is good, the product will eventually surface to the top and consumers will vote with their wallet. B2B SaaS is a entirely different story.

There are many other factors in play:

  • Convincing a whole team/company to adopt your tool

  • Migrating customers from existing tools

  • The person buying your tool is often different from the people using it

  • Defining a category – how do you convince people you are doing something different

  • Competing with the default – spreadsheets are unanimous

We hope that documenting our journey will motivate, encourage and inspire you not to to give up. As well as helping us clarify our thinking around if we’re on the right track.

2. Who is this for

This is meant for anyone building a SaaS product but especially for folk without too much experience in the world of SaaS.

We will cover topics relevant to founders, CTOs, UX designers as well as others.

3. What you can expect

In our posts we will share our experiences and thought in:

  • Technology write-ups. Our approaches

  • UX deep dives

  • Product marketing

  • Everything else related to building our SaaS product

We’re also learning on this journey, we won’t get everything right first time, but hopefully building this community will help keep us honest.

Superthread is an all-in-one project management and wiki app for small teams. It has projects, tasks, and docs integrated in one unified tool. Designed for cross-functional companies where engineers, product, design, marketing, and operations can work together.
